The MACK Group, LLC (MACK), a premier asbestos abatement and removal contractor, recently completed a large asbestos removal and abatement project for a large petrochemical facility in the State of New Jersey. The project goals were to remove a significant quantity of asbestos containing materials (ACM) within a tight schedule.
There was a significant amount of asbestos containing materials (ACM) that the client needed MACK to abate. Quantities of ACM included 6,500 lf of pipe insulation, 175,000 sf of roofing, 9,500 sf of tile & mastic, 6,500 lf of window caulking and various amounts of boiler insulation.
Prior to any work, various mobilization tasks needed to be completed. This included the placement of all required signage on all entrances to the building, establishing connections to electric and water and the building of decontamination facilities. For VAT and mastic removal work areas, modified containments and the establishment of a negative air environment was required. This included the installation of all temporary electric with ground fault interrupter circuitry (GFI), applying 2 layers of fire rated 6-mil poly on all critical barriers and installation of negative air units enough to create 4 changes per hour.
Following setup and mobilization, asbestos abatement activities commenced starting with VAT and Mastic removal. To properly abate this ACM, the materials were wetted and then removed utilizing chemical and/or Blastrac methods. All ACM waste from work area through the air lock / waste chamber then directly into 6 mil poly lined dumpsters/ trailers with the proper OSHA labeling and generator labels for disposal.
Pipe insulation was then abated. Insulation within established work areas was wetted and removed. All pipe insulation outside established work areas was removed via glovebags. ACM waste was placed in 6 mil poly lined dumpsters/ trailers with the proper OSHA labeling and generator labels for disposal.
All asbestos roofing removal was performed as non-friable abatement work utilizing dust control methods (misting with hand pump sprayers and/or hose nozzles). The roofing material was placed on poly sheeting and subsequently loaded directly into polyethylene lined open dumpsters and dump trailers (with the proper OSHA labeling and generator labels) for disposal.
Throughout the entire project, all OSHA sampling, recalculation of air pumps, etc. was performed by MACK’s competent person and/or site supervisor, as required per OSHA regulations, utilizing personal air pumps on a worker and analysis by an independent third party laboratory. Results were posted and a copy was supplied to the onsite representative. All TEM final sampling, recalculation of air pumps, etc. were performed by an independent third party, supplied by the owner, as per required regulations.
Upon completion of asbestos removal, all areas were inspected to ensure all ACM was removed. Final inspection tasks included the wet wiping and HEPA vacuum of all equipment and then removal from work area, encapsulate everything in the work area utilizing an airless sprayer. If no visible dust was found, final TEM air tests were taken. After passing final tests, the MACK Group wetted and removed any critical barriers as ACM.
To complete the project on schedule, MACK utilized an average size of our crew will be 7-11 men. The MACK also utilized various types of remediation equipment including Micro Traps (air filtration units), HEPA Vacuums, ladders, lifts, airless sprayers, respirators, air monitoring equipment, cutting tools, Bobcats, Loaders, PPE, and an assortment of hand & power tools.
